Improvements to the park
The story of Smokey Bear Park begins in the 1960s with the construction of a 4.5-acre park. A partnership between the Florida Forest Service and the Rotary Club of Gainesville helped create this unique park in Gainesville, Florida. In 1965, the park was completed, complete with a Rotary Whee monument. Since then, the park has grown from 4.5 acres to seven acres. A recent $350,000 renovation of the park was made possible by the passage of a half-cent sales tax referendum for Wild Spaces and Public Places.
As part of the park’s renovation, the Gainesville Parks Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department are holding a dedication ceremony for the new playground, picnic facilities, pavilion, walking paths, dog park, and parking area.
